Who Is Uncle Moose and why is he traveling around the world?

This is a blog about my attempt to travel to 160 (or more)  countries before I leave this earth.

My father died when he was 45 years old and I was 8.  I grew up assuming that heredity had doomed me to a short life, and I had to cram my Three Score and Ten years into a much shorter period.    By the time I was 30 years old, I had traveled to a grand total of one country (Canada) outside the United States.  A business trip to Senegal (to which I added a stopover in Paris) got me started, and over the 30 ensuing years, I’ve made it to 156 countries.  Not only that, I’ve made it well past 45 years old.

About 15 years ago, I started sending emails to friends and co-workers while on my trips, most of which (the emails, not my friends and co-workers) are lost in the bowels of the internet, so I decided to start this blog to record my experiences and make a more permanent record of my travels.

And the question you’ve waiting to ask–who is Uncle Moose?  My real given name (Morse) is a bit non-standard, and when I was young, I acquired the nickname Mike, which I use as my “work” name.  However, when I was in the 5th grade, a classmate gave me the nickname “Moose”, which is what my family and most friends call me.  When my first nieces and nephew came along, they called me “Uncle Moose”, so there you have it.  I have also managed to acquire a PhD along the way, so you may also refer to me as “Dr. Moose”.
